Choosing which flagpole or flagpole parts to buy can be a bit uneasy task. Here are a few of the terms to understand when looking for ownership of the flagpole.

  • Ornament: A flagpole ornament sits at the head of the pole and is primarily decorative.
  • Truck: The truck is the part of the flagpole that is in-ground that covers the top, keeps hold of the ornament in place, and includes the pulley to which the halyard is tied.
  • Halyard: A flagpole halyard is a kind of rope or a stainless steel cable that gives the support to fasten a flag on the outside of the pole.
  • External halyard flagpole: This type of flagpole features a rope that proceeds from the truck at the top of the flagpole to the cleat where it is fixed.
  • Internal halyard flagpole: This flagpole has a hidden halyard inside. These internal halyard flagpoles are quite expensive, as they provide a cleaner look and added security.
  • Satin finish: This is the natural condition of brushed aluminum.
  • Clear anodized finish: Clear anodized flagpole make the flagpole more durable when exposed to elements like salt water and ocean air.
  • Snaps: These hooks are fixed with the halyard to the flag’s grommets.
  • Cleat: Typically used on external halyard flagpoles, this is a hook-type fastener on the side of a flagpole.
  • Yardarm: These create a lower case “t” or across and are horizontally mounted, tapered kind of pole that is attached to a vertical flagpole,
  • Gaff: It’s a rig used on nautical flagpoles that extend from the flagpole and rise at an angle.
  • Wall thickness: This applies to the tubing thickness used to construct the flagpole.
  • Butt diameter: It is the width of the bottom of the flag pole.
  • Flash collar: A decorative ring that touches the ground, splitting up the exposed and unexposed sections of the pole.
  • Shoe base: A shoe base is another option to hold up a flash collar.
  • Ground sleeve: A tube built of PVC or steel underground and is used to balance an in-ground flagpole.
